Gallery Exhibit "Architecture of Memory and Place: Drawings, Lithographs, and Assemblages of Abe Kimball"

Salt Lake City, UT, 84115 Abe Kimball resides with his wife and children in the mountains of central Utah. He is dedicated to teaching art in public schools and Snow College. Abe has been entrenched in the arts since a small child, watching various artists, especially his artist-father where he learned the craft of lithography. He also received printer training at Tamarind Institute in New Mexico UNM and a BFA at Brigham Young University. Abe values the medium for both its methodical and seemingly unpredictable processes. Abe also holds degrees in sociocultural anthropology and interdisciplinary studies, where he entertains a love affair with ethnographic research and pseudo-reality. Today, much of Abe’s art portrays forgotten peoples along with their material culture - the intent is to juxtapose vestiges of cultures with the innocence of nature as symbols of adaptation to life and land. While very absorbed in printmaking, Abe is also known to utilize found objects in sculptural-assemblages. His process might be described as an idiosyncratic recontextualization of archaic subjects. Abe talks about his art process in terms of participant observation with the physical world. He postulates that, “Our observations create layers of experience… and the gradual, or sometimes abrupt, accumulation or destruction of this information can be transformative... especially as disparate elements of our lives converge to make meaning.”
