Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony begins in darkness. But from the melodic “fate” motif, a sublime energy swells and unfurls toward a whirlwind finale—ultimate transcendence. Conductor Domingo Hindoyan leads you through each glowing movement. What will you discover along the way? Pair Tchaikovsky’s high romanticism with two allegorical works for orchestra. Fairytale Poem by the late Soviet composer Sofia Gubaidulina depicts a mystical piece of chalk that (like a self-sacrificing artist) longs to keep drawing great castles and landscapes, even as it dissolves into dust. Then, violinist Maria Ioudenitch dazzles with Bernstein’s thrilling Serenade, a series of musical portraits exploring the multidimensionality of love from the varying viewpoints of prominent ancient Greeks, as captured by the philosopher Plato.
