Del Dicho al Hecho July 28, 2026 - February 22, 2027 Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center - On Site Exhibition Del Dicho al Hecho explores the intersection of textile heritage, visual art, and popular wisdom through a series of artistically intervened rebozos by Oaxacan artist Luis Rosado Montes. The rebozo, an iconic garment deeply embedded in Mexican cultural life, has long functioned as both a practical object and a symbol of identity, femininity, and social memory. Worn across generations and regions of Mexico, it carries within its fibers the stories of everyday life, community rituals, and cultural continuity. In this exhibition, traditional rebozos from Mitla, Oaxaca, woven on backstrap looms using ancestral Zapotec techniques, become the foundation for a contemporary artistic intervention. Through painting and mixed media, Rosado overlays these textiles with imagery inspired by Mexican sayings and proverbs, expressions that distill collective experience into concise and often poetic forms of wisdom. These phrases, deeply rooted in oral tradition, function as cultural codes that transmit humor, resilience, and moral reflection across generations. By transforming the rebozo into a pictorial surface, Rosado creates a dialogue between material heritage and contemporary artistic practice. The works invite viewers to consider how traditional objects can be reinterpreted as living cultural documents where memory, language, and identity converge. In this context, the exhibition becomes not only a celebration of Mexican craftsmanship and vernacular knowledge, but also a reflection on cultural transmission and adaptation.Presented in Salt Lake City, Del Dicho al Hecho also speaks to the experience of migration and cultural continuity beyond national borders. The exhibition highlights how traditions travel with communities and evolve in new contexts while maintaining their symbolic power. Through this lens, the rebozo becomes both artifact and canvas, connecting past and present, Mexico and the diaspora, craft and contemporary art.
