Civic Museum Opening Reception: Urban Plein Air

Civic Museum Opening Reception: Urban Plein Air

The Blocks: Urban Plein Air August 18, 2026 - March 22, 2027 George S. & Dolores Dore Eccles Theater - On Site Exhibition Urban Plein Air e xhibition highlights the energy, architecture, and cultural identity of Downtown Salt Lake City through the eyes of emerging local artists. Organized through The Blocks initiative, this exhibition reflects a collaborative effort by the City and County to strengthen Downtown as the premier cultural district of the Intermountain West by activating public spaces, fostering creative partnerships, and supporting the next generation of artists. This year’s Plein Air program places a special emphasis on artists from across the community. The artists were paired with significant Downtown buildings, landmarks, and local businesses, creating original artworks inspired by the character, history, and atmosphere of the city. Through painting and observational practice, each artist offers a unique perspective on the built environment and the stories embedded within it. Prior to display at the Civic Museum, the artworks were displayed throughout Downtown Salt Lake City in the windows and lobbies of the buildings that inspired them, transforming the city into a walkable, open-air gallery experience. The Civic Museum exhibition at the Eccles Theater then brings these works together in a shared public space, allowing visitors to experience a collective portrait of Downtown through diverse artistic viewpoints. Artists participating in the exhibition were identified through partnerships with the University of Utah, Workshop SLC, and an open call to the broader community. This approach supports accessibility, representation, and a broad range of artistic voices while providing meaningful professional opportunities for emerging artists.
