DEEP RISING:
A luxury ocean liner on its maiden voyage in the South China Sea experiences technical difficulties with its communications and navigation systems—and a much bigger problem. Later, a group of mercenaries and a small ship crew they hired to transport them into the sea encounter the large vessel, which was part of the mercs' mission all along. They board it and find nearly everybody gone—and a massive tentacled monster that has infested the entire ship! They must race to get off the ship alive, or turn into human seafood!
Directed and written by Stephen Sommers between his live adaptation of THE JUNGLE BOOK and his revamp of THE MUMMY, DEEP RISING is of of Hollywood's last studio-produced big-budget sci-fi action horror thrillers of the 1990s. Like an old school exploitation film, it mines from all kinds of popular horror and action films from the '80s and '90s, like PREDATOR, ALIENS, and LEVIATHAN. It is representative of a type of popular entertainment that is rarely revisited in this day and age. Its combination of humor, thrills, good actors, surprisingly nasty gore, and impressive CGI for the time have made it a cult favorite for almost thirty years, despite being a box office flop.
It stars Treat Williams (DEAD HEAT), Famke Janssen (GOLDENEYE), Wes Studi (THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS), Kevin J. O'Connor (THE MUMMY), and Jason Flemyng (LOCK, STOCK, AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS). Cinematography was handled by Howard Atherton (BAD BOYS) and music was composed by Jerry Goldsmith (ALIEN).
Enjoy the fourth night of ACTION! by the Film Buff Series at Brewvies this month!
