Film Buff Series - EVENT HORIZON (1997) / MARTYRS (2008, France)

On Monday, October 12th, Film Buff continues its month-long Horror Series! Each night features multiple screenings played in consecutive order! For the second night, the theme is CORPOREAL NIGHTMARES: 1st movie: EVENT HORIZON (1997) In 2047, US Aerospace Command receives a distress signal from a a ship that disappeared several years earlier. A crew is sent to investigate; on the way, they learn that the ship has an experimental gravity drive that can fold space-time for travel. After arrival, the crew discover the remains of a massacre and begin to experience hallucinations and paranoia. This "haunted house in space" is one of the best horror films from 1997 and has an entertainingly nasty flavor! 2nd movie: MARTYRS (2008, France) Lucie intrudes into a family home to take revenge on the people she believes were responsible for imprisoning and torturing her when she was a kid. Her friend Anna arrives to help, but Lucie's mental state deteriorates. Then, Anna discovers a deep, hidden secret within the home... MARTYRS represents the peak of the New Wave of French Horror that kicked-off in the first decade of the 21st century. It is often associated with the so-called New French Extremity "movement" for its strong graphic violence and thematic interests. Ultimately, it is an emotionally resonant exploration of trauma, suffering, vengeance, power, and, perhaps surprisingly, transcendence. This film is not for the faint of heart. This is why it will be played after the first film, even though we believe it is the centerpiece of the night. It is intense, brutal, and terrifying, yet rewarding, substantive, and sincere.
