Interdependence Day: A Story Circle

Join a small group on the first Saturday of each month to relish in other people's stories, be understood anew through your story, and gain understandings with others that would not be possible alone. Story Circles include 6-8 people who gather and share stories on a common theme from their own lives. Collectively, the group explores what can be learned from the stories together that would be harder to understand from any particular story alone. August theme: In the US, we celebrate independence the first week of July, and we view independence as a virtue every day of the year. But independence is a myth (thank goodness). As it turns out, we need each other! So this year, the first weekend in August let’s take some time to celebrate and tell stories of our interdependence. Share a story about a person whose kindness left a lasting impression . Tell us about the time that life brought you to your knees and forced you to rely on another person (even if you tried to resist it). Share the story about what grew out of your covid bubble, how you created a chosen family, or about what it felt like to not belong. Mia Birdsong, in her book How We Show Up, points out that the word free is derived from the word friya which means “beloved,” and that friend shares the same root. Let’s consider together through our stories how our interdependence rather than independence can free us!
