Festival of Science: Lisbon Valley Mine Tour

A special opportunity to see what is happening at the Lisbon Valley Mine, the only sandstone-hosted copper deposit producing in the western hemisphere. Mining copper from sandstone allows for unusually pure copper: the mine produces 99.999% pure copper cathode used in wiring, electronics and green energy applications. The mine is a zero-discharge facility, its pits are backfilled as mining progresses, and the operator practices concurrent reclamation, regrading and revegetating disturbed areas as it goes. The tour covers the science and history of the site as an example of the interplay between geology and human activity in canyon country. About three hours including drive time.
