LAST ACTION HERO (1993) - Part of the Haymaker Summer Series

For July, we will be presenting the (sadly overlooked) meta masterpiece LAST ACTION HERO, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Following Danny Madigan — a lonely, movie-obsessed pre-teen that gets sucked into an action film after coming into possession of a magic ticket — LAST ACTION HERO is packed with endless pop culture references and re-imaginings. Directed by John McTiernan of both Predator and Die Hard fame, the film slickly moves from action set pieces to the truly novel self-reflection of a fictional action hero presented with a new, impossible reality.

An infamous commercial flop, LAST ACTION HERO was doomed to fail when it was scheduled to release one week after Jurassic Park, a massive success (earning $47M during its opening weekend, with a 16-week theatrical run) that stole the hearts and minds of 1993 summer audiences. Despite a troubled production and a script that changed hands several times, the final product remains a one-of-a-kind experience; a meta film for action fans three years before Scream, both a fourth-wall-breaking takedown of the genre and a genuinely sincere love letter to American Muscle.
