Why did artists like Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso, Edgar Degas, Käthe Kollwitz, M. C. Escher, and Rembrandt feel drawn to this rich and versatile process? Etching opens the door to endless creative possibilities. Its distinctive lines, expressive range of mark-making, and deeply tactile nature have fascinated artists for centuries. In this one-day class, we’ll dive into the essentials of etching. Students will learn how to prepare a copper plate with a hard ground and create their own line-based image. From there, we’ll explore how to ink the plate and pull a finished print. By the end, students will leave with both the skills and confidence to continue exploring this compelling medium.
